Supporting Hawaiʻi's Working Families

Every day, thousands of hardworking families across Hawaiʻi do everything right. They work, pay their bills, and contribute to their communities, yet still struggle to afford the basics.

These households are known as ALICE® (Asset Limited, Income Constrained, Employed). They earn above the Federal Poverty Level but below the income needed to cover Hawaiʻi's high cost of living.

For ALICE families, everyday decisions can mean choosing between groceries and rent, childcare and healthcare, or paying bills and building savings.

Hard work should be enough.

The Aloha United Way ALICE Fund invests in solutions that help working families move from surviving to thriving. Through partnerships with nonprofit organizations across Hawaiʻi, we support programs that strengthen financial stability, increase income, build savings, reduce debt, and expand access to safe and affordable housing.

Creating Pathways to Financial Stability

Together with 21 nonprofit partner agencies, the AUW ALICE Cohort is helping families build a stronger financial future.

Our Impact

  • 21 partner agencies participating in the AUW ALICE Cohort
  • 29,052 participants served
  • 621 participants reduced their debt
  • 1,614 participants increased their savings
  • 920 participants increased their income through support services
  • 6,824 participants strengthened their job readiness skills

These outcomes represent more than numbers. They represent local families gaining greater financial security, creating new opportunities, and building a stronger future for themselves and future generations.

While meaningful progress has been made, too many working families continue to face rising costs and difficult financial challenges. Continued investment in ALICE helps expand access to the tools, resources, and opportunities families need to achieve long-term economic stability.
